Basketball

Blog Post
By: Rhina Garcia

Good morning fellow classmates, today I will be talking about the things we learned in gym class. So far during gym class, we are learning about basketball. Basketball is one of the most famous sports in North America and it is played by two teams that have five players on the court. It's a really good exercise for us teens, if you want to get in shape or you can just play if you're in love with the sport. When you're playing a game of basketball, you can be aggressive and excited.

During gym class, we learned how to dribble and we learned some passing drills such as chest pass, bounce pass, and overhead pass. Before gym class was over, we played a game called horse. There isn't a lot of things we have learned about basketball since we just started. Thanks for listening (: !

EGYPT

EGYPT
For the beginning of term 2 we are starting off with Egypt in Social Studies class. The first things that we got were 2 booklets about Egypt and a booklet for some of the vocabulary that will be in this section. We also had watched 2 movies they were both about the pyramid, but the first one was kind of about a certain guy, it told a story about how a guy and his brother who were sent from their home to help build the pyramid. They had stayed there for a while but the guy’s brother had died and the guy didn’t want to go home without him so he finished building the pyramids, but he stayed there. The only thing that was bad about the movie was that it was supper glitchy and hurt my eyes.
The second movie was more of a documentary then a movie, but it was telling us about how the pyramids and where the people who built the pyramid lived and what they eat. It also showed what the houses looked like and the kind of thing they ate and drank from. Another thing they showed was what a grave site looked like. One looked like an actual grave site and another one looked like a dome shaped pyramid. And finally on Wednesday we got a worksheet that had 25 questions asking about the daily life of the Egyptians.

Exams by Faith

Exams...

In the past week or so, the grade 8s faced their dreaded first exams. Everyone was very nervous and scared that they wouldn't do well. However, the teachers  helped us prepare. We even learned tips on how to study well and take notes in ICT class. We also got time to review and an explanation of what was going to happen down there. We had our science exam first, then ELA, then math, and finally social studies.

My personal experience with the exam was actually not that bad. I felt more nervous as we were waiting outside the cafeteria before the exam, but once I got in and started doing it my nerves were gone. Time seems to go by slow as well. The only tips I could give to do well is to study the material well and make sure you know and understand it. You should also take your time and check over your answers. There's no other tricks besides that. Hopefully everyone will do even better next year.

                                                                      Science Class

For my blog post today I will be talking about what we are learning and what experiments we will be performing in science class. In science we are learning about fluids. We just started this unit so we haven’t learned very much yet. The main things we’ve learnt are what fluids are and what viscosity is. Throughout my blog post I will discuss the definition of these topics and how we prove them in experiments.

Fluids are any substance that flows, spreads out evenly when poured, and exerts pressure. Fluids are usually gases or liquids. An example of a fluid is carbon dioxide. To prove that carbon dioxide is a fluid, in class we did an experiment. In the experiment, we put baking soda and vinegar in a beaker than put the top of the beaker over a lighted candle. The candle needed oxygen but carbon dioxide took the oxygen’s place when it was ‘poured’ out of the beaker, therefore, making it a fluid.

We have also learned about viscosity. Viscosity is the opposite of fluidity and is the resistance of a fluid to change in shape or movement. Fluids that flow easily or quickly are not viscous. We will be performing an experiment on the viscosity of various fluids. We will have a cookie sheet on an angle and will pour the fluid while timing the amount of time it took to reach the finish line on the cookie sheet. This experiment will be taking place on Friday, February 6th. I hoped you enjoyed my blog. Thank you.
